How many garden tools do you really need? Big shovel, hoe, flat rakes, pitch fork, edger, pruners and hand trowel.
Shovels come in several shapes and each one is really made for different jobs. But for the average gardener starting out a nice round ended shovel will get the job done. Used mostly for turning soil and transplanting larger plants to new homes.
Hoes are used mostly in Vegetable gardens to weed between the rows, so if your mostly into flowers you can wait on buying this garden tool.
Flat rakes are the made for mixing in compost and leveling off and preparing the beds before planting. Don't confuse a flat rake from a leaf rake. Used mostly at the start and end of the gardening season.
Pitch Forks are the heavy workers. Pitch forks are used to break new ground, turn the compost pile, loosen hard packed soil and lots of other things. Make sure it is sturdy and has strong tines.
Garden Edgers come in real hand keeping a garden edge nice and sharp, they also save a lot time on hands and knees. Keep the edgers cutting edge sharp to help cut through the sod and the odd root.
Hand Trowels are the most used garden tool I think. A good hand trowel should be an extension of your own hand. Used for so many things; transplanting, making trenches for seeds, mixing in fertilizer, weeding, and more. With a Hand trowel you might like to have add a hand rake, they usually have three tines and help when working in close quarters with your flowers.
Garden Pruners or cutters are a need garden tool, they are used to trim and prune both trees, plants and vines. The blade and cutting mechanism are important so chose carefully or you will get dull cuts and poor results.
